About our programme:
10.00 Registration and Coffee
10.30-11.30 Part 1: UNDRESSING ANTIQUES
“Antiques. I don’t understand them and they’re beyond my budget. They’re not for me.” A persuasive introduction to buying antiques and integrating and using them in today’s homes. The state of the antiques market and the different meanings of the word ‘value’ are considered. We take a look at what current and future generations of collectors are buying, why they are buying it and how they are displaying it.
11.30-12.00: Coffee Break
12.00-13.00 Part 2: CURVES, COLOURS & COOL - An Introduction to Mid-Century Modern
The antiques market has changed dramatically and now pieces that were made during the 1970s can fetch many times more than a piece made in the 1770s. Why has the teak sideboard you threw out become so desirable? Who is this Eames guy? Drawing a blank with Timo Sarpaneva? Who’s buying what and what are they doing with it? This practical and inspirational lecture looks at furniture, ceramics, glass, lighting and metal ware, identifies key designs and designers, and then examines the revolutionary design movements they began.
13.00-14.00: Seated Buffet Lunch
14.00-15.00 Part 3: SHOW and TELL! – An informal Session
This Lecture involves Mark working with the audience to run an identification or Q&A session around the items brought in by members. The aim is for a successful interaction and enjoyable last hour of the Day. Mark usually selects around 12-20 items to talk about in front of his audience.
GUIDANCE ON ITEMS TO BRING
Please only bring along your smaller 20th century ceramics and glass items. For example, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernism, Mid-century and other up to the present day - things found, and even used, at home. Mark requests no militaria, medals, books, antiquities or jewellery at all, and some silver and pictures can be challenging.
If you do plan to bring something along, please email Lis Stackhouse at teignartssid@gmail.com with details of the item.
